  1. What about Lawrencium its the 103rd element.

    • Yes you are right, Lawrencium is not included in my periodic table. Here is the information:
      Atomic number: 103

      Because this chemical isn’t very stable, and hasn’t been used very much, it is typically excluded from periodic tables, but if you want to know more about the chemical, go to this wikipedia page:

  2. 1) what elements does water consist of ?

    2) what elements do you get when you split water ?

    • Water consists of 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen, If you split it, you get Hydrogen gas (H2) and Oxygen Gas (O2) The mechanism will look something like this:

      2H2O yeilds H2 + O2

      • What you said about water being 2 parts hydrogen and 1 part oxygen is correct. Unfortunately I do not see how water splits into H2 and O2. (chemical formula of water= H2O). This effects the Law of Conservation of Mass, because when you split water according to what you said H2/O2, where did you get that extra atom of oxygen it seems you have created something from nothing.

        2H2O —> H2 + O2 2H2O —> 4H + 2O
        Incorrect (improperly balanced) Correct
        This formula here you have put down as the mechanics would be incorrect because it is not balanced correctly. Unless you are breaking apart 2 molecules of H2O (see formula on the right ).
        But, to answer #2 (2) what elements do you get when you split water ?). I believe the correct answer is the following:

        H2O —–> 2H + O

    splitting water produces the elements Hydrogen and Oxygen which on their own exist in stable diatomic molecules.

    Though how much energy are you putting into this reaction?

    • H2O yields H2 and O2 when decomposed. The reason there is 2 oxygens is because one oxygen cannot remain alone. It either has to be paired with another element or there must be two of them. The same goes for Br,I,N,Cl,H,F

    • Actually the correct way to write that is 2 H2O (l) —> H3O+ (aq) + OH- (aq). The proton does not exist by itself in isolation when in solution; it combines with another molecule of H2O to form H3O+, the hydronium ion.

  9. I understand H20 yields-> H2 O, but i have never seen 2H2 ever… The number is subscript only here! Water is not complicated enough to get into advanced chemical geometry…

    2 molecules of H2O (the 2 is a subscript!) would produce 2 molecules of H2 (that 2 is a subscript aswell :D) and 1 molecule of O2 (yup you’ve guessed there is a pattern here)

    The molecule can be described as tetrahedral if you take into account the 2 sets of lone pairs on the oxygen, this gives it the appearence of a ‘bent’ molecule

    For clarification, the reaction is as below

    2H2O –> 2H2 + O2 it is highly exothermic!

    • Sorry Boris but breaking up water does not release energy, if it did then the hydrogen economy would be in FANTASTIC shape!

      Breaking up water has a reaction enthalpy of 241,818 J/mol. So the reaction is ENDOTHERMIC, breaking down water by electrolysis requires massive amounts of energy!

      Also water can undergo acid base interactions with its hydrogen as chem prof said, but the reaction is REVERSIBLE. An Acid or base should be present to effect the PH of water.
